Key Features:
- Historic and Architectural Significance: Locust Grove was built by James Beverly Lewis Williams, a tobacco farmer and Methodist minister and completed in 1840 in the middle of the Antebellum Period (1830-1860). The architectural style is Federal, with significant Greek Revival influences. The Virginia Department of Historic Resources file on Locus Grove contains an entry from 1973 as follows: “This red-brick farmhouse was built in the 1840s. Like many houses in this area, it has a central hall with one large room on each side, on both floors. Each room has a fireplace. Both exterior and interior walls are built of bricks which were made on the place, and the plaster is applied directly to the bricks. The floors are old wide heart-pine and the 10-foot ceilings are constructed of split Chestnut laths. Much of the woodwork is pegged. The structure is currently in excellent condition.”
- Main House: 4 spacious bedrooms on the second level along with 3 full baths, another full bath on the main level, heart pine floors, tile baths, main floor laundry closet, 5 fireplaces with gas logs (3 on main level, 2 on 2nd level), solid brick walls in the front portion from bricks made on site, exterior brick work that reflects a modified “Flemish Bond” technique for superior strength,10 ft. ceilings with extensive wood moldings, and a full basement with multiple rooms including a former “bomb-shelter” space (ca. 1960s) that could be easily retrofitted by any “prepper” enthusiasts.
- Modern Addition: More “Southern charm” was added in the 1960’s with an addition that includes 22 ft. columns on the back and sides of the home, creating a grand wrap-around veranda with spacious seating space overlooking the rolling countryside.
- Equestrian Facilities: Superior quality horse barn (64×104) featuring full HVAC, 4 stalls, wash bay, office, automatic waterers, full bathroom, tack room, and large floored attic storage area. Additional barn amenities include a sawdust bin, workshop, and equipment storage. The property also boasts a 120×240 outdoor riding arena with one end mirrored, paddocks, working pen, run-in shed, and heated waterers in the barn and paddocks. The equestrian facilities, designed with both horse and rider in mind, are truly exceptional.
